Community Oyster Reef Construction at the Palacios Coastal Education Pavilion

July 10, 2019

Local volunteers, 4-H youth and members of the Galveston Bay Area Texas Master Naturalists used recycled oyster shells to build a small oyster reef at the new Palacios Coastal Education Pavilion located on the shores of Tres Palacios Bay. The effort was funded by a mini-grant from the Gulf of Mexico Alliance and directed and managed by Texas Sea Grant and The Matagorda Bay Foundation. Texas Sea Grant and MBF staff hope to use the new reef to enhance youth education efforts that focus on the importance of ecosystem services provided by coastal organisms and habitats.
